How big do redfish get?
In Louisiana the average redfish is about 11.5 inches at one year old, 24 inches at three and 33 inches at ten and older. The Louisiana state record is 61 pounds, and the world record is 94 pounds, 2 ounces, caught in North Carolina in 1984.

A long time. The oldest redfish aged by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was 39 years old, and the life span can exceed 40 years.

No. Its official name is spotted seatrout and it belongs to the drum family, the same family as the redfish.

Females of both fish grow faster and larger than males. In Louisiana the average female speckled trout is about 19 inches at four years old against 16 for a male, and the average female flounder is about 19 inches at four against 13 for a male.
Why does a flounder have both eyes on one side?
A flounder hatches with an eye on each side of its head. As it grows into a juvenile, the right eye moves over the head to the left side, so the fish can lie on the bottom with both eyes looking up.
When do flounder leave the marsh?
As the water cools in October and November, mature flounder move from the estuaries to the Gulf to spawn. They spawn offshore between November and January and return to the estuaries between January and April.
Licenses
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. You supply a current fishing license. Under Louisiana rules, anyone age 18 or older needs a Basic Fishing License to fish recreationally in Louisiana waters, and a Saltwater License as well to fish south of the state's saltwater line. Anyone 17 or under does not need either one.
