Your fishing license
A current fishing license is the one thing on the list that you have to arrange before the trip.
Under Louisiana rules, anyone age 18 or older needs a Basic Fishing License to fish recreationally in Louisiana waters, and a Saltwater License as well to fish south of the state's saltwater line. Anyone 17 or under does not need either one.
Licenses are sold online by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
What to wear
Dress for the month. From June through September the average high is 86 to 89 degrees, and July and August are the wettest months of the year, so sun protection and a light rain jacket both earn their place.
From December through February the average low is around 48 to 51 degrees and the high is only in the low to mid 60s. It feels colder than that on a boat running at first light, so bring layers you can take off as the day warms up.
Spring and fall are the mild months, with highs in the 70s and low 80s.
Venice weather, month by month
These are 30-year averages from the NOAA weather station at Boothville, next to Venice. Summer is hot and it is the wettest stretch of the year. Winter mornings are cool on a moving boat.
